DESCRIPTION:Bishop’s Commission on Climate Change sets Nov. 20 webinar with scientist Katharine Hayhoe\nInternationally renowned climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe will keynote a diocese-wide webinar set for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday\, Nov. 20 by the Bishop’s Commission on Climate Change. Attendees are asked to register here. \nHayhoe is chief scientist for The Nature Conservancy and a Paul Whitfield Horn Distinguished Professor and the Political Science Endowed Chair in Public Policy and Public Law in the Department of Political Science at Texas Tech University\, where she is also an associate in the Public Health program of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. In addition\, she is a principal investigator for the Department of Interior’s South-Central Climate Adaptation Science Center and the National Science Foundation’s Global Infrastructure Climate Network. \nHayhoe notes that her research “currently focuses on establishing a scientific basis for assessing the regional to local-scale impacts of climate change on human systems and the natural environment. To this end\, I analyze observations\, compare future scenarios\, evaluate global and regional climate models\, build and assess statistical downscaling models\, and constantly strive to develop better ways of translating climate projections into information relevant to agriculture\, ecosystems\, energy\, infrastructure\, public health\, and water resources.” \nThe Bishop’s Commission has chosen the theme “Now Is the Time for Urgency and Hope” for the webinar\, which follows last year’s well-attended diocesan climate change summit keynoted by seismologist Lucy Jones\, senior warden at St. James’\, South Pasadena. The commission – chaired by the Rev. Canon Melissa McCarthy\, diocesan canon to the ordinary – has set a pattern of alternating a webinar with a biennial in-person summit\, thus reducing the carbon imprint that would be created by an annual event. \nAmong current projects\, the commission’s education subcommittee is identifying a liaison from each of the diocese’s 133 congregations\, some of which have “green teams” in place. The commission’s other active subcommittees focus on advocacy\, legislation\, solar panels\, and disaster resilience. More information is online here.

Our guest speaker\, Katharine Hayhoe\, will speak on “Christians\, Climate\, and Our Culture Around the World.” Dr. Hayhoe is an atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on understanding the impacts of climate change on people and the planet.  She is a distinguished professor and chair at Texas Tech University\, and chief scientist for The Nature Conservancy. She is also the author of the book “Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World.”\n\n\nAt its core\, climate change is profoundly unjust. It exacerbates hunger\, poverty\, and even political instability\, disproportionally impacting the most vulnerable people of the world\, the very ones we Christians are called to love and care for. As the scientific evidence builds\, however\, so does the opposition to solutions: they’re impractical\, or they’ll harm people\, or they’re even too late\, some argue. Why is climate change such a difficult problem to solve\, and what can we as Christians do about it? DESCRIPTION:About this Event: \nKatharine Hayhoe is an accomplished atmospheric scientist who studies climate change and why it matters to us here and now. She is also a remarkable communicator who has received the National Center for Science Education’s Friend of the Planet award\, the American Geophysical Union’s Climate Communication Prize\, the Sierra Club’s Distinguished Service award\, and has been named to a number of lists including Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People\, Foreign Policy’s 100 Leading Thinkers\, FORTUNE magazine’s World’s Greatest Leaders and the United Nations Champion of the Earth in Science and Innovation. \nHayhoe is Chief Scientist for The Nature Conservancy and she is also a Paul W. Horn Distinguished Professor and the Political Science Endowed Professor in Public Policy and Public Law at Texas Tech University. She has a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Toronto and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Illinois and has been awarded honorary doctorates from Colgate University and Victoria University at the University of Toronto. \nClick here to learn more about this event.
